What is included in the CASCO insurance? How does it work?

CASCO is insurance for road vehicles and auxiliary equipment. CASCO protects you from loss in the event of the theft, damage or total destruction of your vehicle. The insurer will provide free roadside assistance or even offer a courtesy car while your own vehicle is being repaired.

CASCO coverage includes:

  • Base risks: traffic accident, fire, natural disasters, vandalism, theft, robbery, windows, damage done by animals, transportation, roadside assistance.
  • Additional risks: vehicle replacement, luggage insurance, repairs at your chosen repair service, accident insurance, hydrolocking, the use of unsuitable fuel, key replacement and other risks.

Please see your CASCO quote or policy to see exact information on the risks your vehicle is insured for.

How do I apply for CASCO insurance?

If you wish to receive a quote for CASCO, please:

What is OCTA?

OCTA (compulsory civil liability insurance) is compulsory civil liability insurance for the owners of land vehicles, and is compulsory for all vehicles which use public roads in Latvia.
OCTA does not insure the vehicle itself or any damage to the vehicle – it only provides compensation to third parties who have suffered in an accident caused by the insured vehicle.

What do I do if an insurable CASCO incident occurs?

1. If a road accident occurs, contact the State Police or fill in a Concerted Statement. Bear in mind that you can only fill in a concerted statement if just two vehicles are involved in the incident, and if both drivers agree on the circumstances of the incident. Furthermore, there must be no injured persons, no damage to third party property, and no damage to the vehicles which renders them legally or physically unable to be driven. In any other situation, the drivers must notify the Road Police.

2. If an incident has occurred and you need roadside assistance, call your insurer or submit a claim through the insurer’s website:

In which countries is my OCTA policy valid?

Your OCTA policy is valid in all European Economic Area member countries, you can view the list of countries here.
If you plan on taking your vehicle to a country not on this list, you will also have to purchase another type of Motor Third Party Liability insurance: the Green Card. If you require a Green Card, please contact us by sending an email to: citadele.brokeri@citadele.lv.
Check the OCTA policy status of your vehicle, and the countries it is valid in, here

What are the differences between OCTA and KASKO?

OCTA is compulsory insurance which provides compensation to third parties, whereas KASKO is voluntary insurance which protects against losses caused by the theft, damage or write-off of the vehicle.

What is covered?

With commercial property insurance, you can insure buildings, rooms, equipment, machinery, goods and technological equipment.

Equipment can be insured against risks caused by:

  • Fire: fire; explosion; direct lightning strike; being hit by a piloted aircraft, part of such aircraft, or cargo; damage caused by smoke, soot or extinguishing equipment.
  • Plumbing emergencies: heating, waste, water system and similar system emergencies; losses to the insured object caused by frost; third-party action or inaction resulting in water or steam leakage.
  • Natural disasters: storm; hail; flood; heavy snow; earthquake.
  • Illegal third-party activity: theft with break-in; robbery; vandalism; collision with vehicle; graffiti.
  • Electrical issues: direct physical damage or destruction caused by a short circuit, overvoltage, undervoltage or other electrical fault.

What does OCTA cover?

When you purchase an OCTA policy, you insure your responsibility against potential damage to a third party due to an accident caused by the insured vehicle. This damage can include both losses to another person's property (including their vehicle), and bodily damage inflicted on the victim during the accident.
You can see more detail on what OCTA insures in the Compulsory Civil Liability Insurance of Owners of Motor Vehicles Law.

What kinds of losses does OCTA cover?

OCTA insurance covers losses caused by a traffic accident:
- to a damaged vehicle (if its driver is recognised not to be at fault);
- to an injured third party if the accident damages their property (building, structure etc.);
- to pedestrians, even if the fault of the driver involved in the accident cannot be proved;
- to the damaged vehicle's driver (injury to their health or life);
- to passengers travelling in the vehicle which caused the accident (injury to their health or life);
If a traffic accident is caused by a vehicle without OCTA insurance, the damages to third parties are covered by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Latvia, who will then sue the owner of the at-fault vehicle for all expenses.

How do I apply for equipment insurance?

If you wish to receive a quote for equipment insurance, please:

What is covered by the Equipment insurance? How does it work?

Equipment insurance (CPM) protects you from the financial consequences of the theft, damage or complete destruction of your machinery.
It insures the equipment used in agriculture, forestry, construction, road building, quarries, warehouses, and other equipment or mobile machinery intended for specialised work.

Coverage includes:

  • Named risks: fire, natural disasters, malicious third-party acts (theft, robbery, burglary or vandalism);
  • All risks: sudden and unexpected damage or destruction of the equipment, theft, robbery or burglary, plus all named risks.
  • Additional risks: participation in road traffic, transporting the equipment, spontaneous combustion, freight insurance, equipment replacement, etc.

Please read the full terms and conditions and quote for your policy to see your personal coverage.

What does OCTA not cover?

If an accident happens in Latvia, the policy does not cover:
1) losses to your own person or property caused by a traffic accident with your vehicle;
2) losses caused by an unknown vehicle, unless a person has been injured (pedestrian, passenger etc.);
3) losses to property not caused by a traffic accident;
4) losses if the traffic accident occurs during a race or training drive, etc.
More information on exceptions can be found in the Compulsory Civil Liability Insurance of Owners of Motor Vehicles Law.

How do I apply for Specialised equipment insurance?

If you wish to receive a quote for specialised equipment insurance, please:

Is an accident statement form issued in Latvia valid in other countries?

Yes, it is valid, because accident statement forms are the same throughout Europe. Although the forms are in the local language for each country, the content, structure, text and colours are the same throughout Europe. But remember, if you are unsure and cannot agree on the circumstances of the accident, you must notify the police of the accident.

What additional OCTA coverage can I purchase?

In addition to OCTA, you can also purchase different coverage such as roadside assistance, losses caused by theft, collision with an animal, or total write-off of the vehicle.

Where should I turn after a traffic accident?

If you are at fault for causing an accident, you should fill in and submit an accident statement form to your insurer within 10 days of the incident.
If the accident was caused by another party, contact the at-fault party's insurer and fill in an OCTA compensation request.
You can now submit an accident statement form online using the LTAB OCTA mobile app.

How do I correctly fill in the accident statement form?

The most important things to bear in mind:
- describe the accident, not the conditions leading up to it;
- indicate the location of the vehicles;
- mark the vehicles with the letters A and B and indicate the direction of traffic;
- if known, indicate road signs, street names, and other useful information.
You can find a video tutorial on how to correctly fill in an accident statement form here.

Will OCTA cover losses to my vehicle if an accident occurs?

If you are at fault in an accident, OCTA will not cover any damages to your vehicle. OCTA only protects third parties who suffer in an accident caused by your vehicle.
If you suffer damage in an accident and the party at fault is known, the at-fault party's OCTA will cover the losses caused to you and your vehicle.

For which traffic accident cases should I call the police?

If a traffic accident occurs, you must call the police if at least one of the following occurs:
- more than two vehicles are involved in the accident;
- people or animals are injured;
- you cannot agree on the circumstances of the accident;
- it is unclear or you cannot agree on which driver was at fault for the accident;
- damage to a third-party's property has occurred;
- the vehicle has suffered damage which prevents it from driving on a public road.
